Thanks for the good advise. Including the use of PM tools. You mentioned ProjectPier as an open source alternative. You might want to also add PHProjekt, dotproject, and Collabtive. Those web apps all see PM as either a time management and/or requirements tool. For a more full featured approach to PM, I use code-roller.com which also includes use cases, designs, test plans, defect tracking, and surveys. It is very much about transparency with a solid web design process in place.

What an excellent article, full of great advice for dealing with clients. I completely agree with everything you've said here, particularly the part about being personable with clients. As a web developer of 13 years and print designer for 25- I can't stress enough how important it is to take time to TALK to your clients, in person when possible, and let them see you as approachable and real. It can be the difference between landing a contract and losing it to your competition.

And never, ever, ever show up late! However, don't show up 20 minutes early either. Most clients find that equally annoying because they won't be ready, getting the meeting off to an awkward start for everyone.

Think of every single client as your company's advertisement, because they are. Take time to listen to and satisfy every client with whom you work, and you'll never have to advertise. In 13 years I have not advertised my services- not once. All of my work has come by word-of-mouth from happy clients, without exception.

My only other addition would be: "Give the BEST of yourself, every time." These days, it's so easy to get into a habit of splitting our attention or leaving a job half done. In the professional sphere that is just not acceptable. Every client, even the nightmare ones, deserve our best efforts. Or, if you honestly feel the client doesn't deserve it, YOU do. Never release any work to a third party to which you feel you didn't give 100%. Because those poor imitations of your potential will leave a bad mark on your reputation and in this industry there may be a perpetual record of your foible.

Great article! I agree with every point and thought you hit all of the major ones. A big one I have seen companies struggle with is punctuality. It is very important! Finally, staying on budget is hard, but being up front and transparent help greatly!
