Quick question: What’s better for a website that needs increase in traffic?
a) Change the title meta tag, or
b) Leave the title meta-tag as is, and change body text?

Have you used the meta description tag to suggest to Google the information they should be pulling in their SERPs (search results pages)?

Even if you are, Google can be a real pain with this. Since the description tag is more of a suggestion if anything, Google can pull whatever text they deem relevant to the page. Unfortunately, more often than not, they don’t always do a good job with this.

My suggestion to you is to go back into the description meta, edit it with a more relevant description, and see what happens. You’ll have to give it a few days for Google to reindex that page.

I use CSS drop down menus. One thing not mentioned in this article: The snippet in Google results is unfortunately taken from my drop down menus, which can be text from another page on my site, and this is certainly NOT GOOD. I am looking for a way to tell Google NOT to read the text in the drop down menu, anybody has an idea?

@ Todd Perkins – We agree with you, Todd. However, the fact of the matter is that there any many suitable alternatives to Flash. For example, jQuery. You can accomplish a lot of basic animations with jQuery and it doesn’t require any additional plugin to be downloaded and installed (unlike Adobe’s Flash player). Flash can be used, but it should only be used in moderation.

While I agree that entire Flash sites aren’t the best for SEO, I believe the idea that using any Flash content at all harms SEO is incorrect. Sites like YouTube and Hulu and many others are powered by Flash and are completely searchable because they use alternate content with SWFObject. All you need is some HTML that describes the Flash content and no harm whatsoever is done to SEO on your site.

Brian – Although I certainly hope that the SEO friendly methods mentioned above become a standard practice of website design, one can never be too sure.

Just like anything, it will take time for this practice to become a standard. However, because of the enormous potential of SEO, it won’t be surprising if SEO friendly website design is a standard not too far down the road.
