Matt, this is absolutely a must read post for people who manage their own websites. You laid out the ground rules wonderfully and I for one will be point people to this resource repeatedly. ;-)

Great roadmap!

To what degree to you agree with Millard, “The best sites we’ve found are usable only 42 percent of the time.“ That is rather astounding, but I must say generally I feel this is accurate.

On the other hand, what role do you see providing an intentional challenge or call to action that requires the reader to think hard, but not "too hard"? Should that ever be a part of "navigation" in your mind or elsewhere. I'm thinking along the lines of "surprising" people - such as Amazon's use of the "surprise me" link when previewing books. A small challenge perhaps that allows people to discover content they would not otherwise go after.

Thanks for your pointers!

Thank you for the tips and "tricks" for a vitally important aspect of site design.

I have noticed that even some "mainstream" sites by and for the "big boys" upon the Web have fair to middling site design.

Those "dead ends" are especially bothersome!!!

Another area that, at times, makes me growl with anger (Grrrrrrr) is either a lack of or a too simplistic site map.

When I see a link to a well-designed site map at the bottom of each page I feel "safer" knowing there is always at least an alternative method to wend my way through a site; no matter how large or convoluted it may be.

[...] The Do’s & Don’ts of Website Navigation Usability 6 | Style Guides When starting a new website design, you want to make sure you define your site’s theme and stick with it. A theme includes, but is not limited to: fonts, colors, sizes, layouts, etc. A great way to keep all of these elements the same across each page is to have what is called a style guide. It is very beneficial to have your designer create you a style guide when handing over the final set of files. This way, if you need to make updates or hire someone else to upkeep the website, they know exactly which fonts, colors and any other design guidelines to follow. The more consistency you have with these key elements, the more each page will carry your business identity. This should be one of your main goals of a successful website design. [...]
