Great article. I've been designing sites for clients for a long time now, and only recently was turned on to the powers of CSS. I haven't migrated fully yet -- I'm still learning how to use it -- but I know it's what I'll be using in the future. Thanks so much for the overview and examples!

When I first began building websites in the mid and late 90’s tables where all we knew but there limitations and drawbacks where apparent even in those days. I didn’t actually start working with CSS until I got finished school and got into professional web design. Once I was hired by a big company I was taught that CSS is the only way to go and that tables just cause problems.

I agree with Rohan Shenoy. If it's a small site and you need to whip out a hand coded thing in minutes, tables work fine (basic layout templates in Visual Studio uses tables... :P). I'd be switching to CSS soon after as the site grew or I had more time to do it right. De-fits the article content, isn't all this bitching really just beating an idealism drum (or maybe just drumming up web hits...tee hee!!!)? Are you saying I need to go with CSS ALL the time? Seems a bit, small minded. I agree with the article but I am reserving my right to do as I please. Thanks for the recap.

I would just add to the list...
14: Many savvy clients are looking for tableless, validated css design. We build a lot of websites and it's amazing to see how many calls are compliments from leads who have actually looked at our source code to determine if they want a proposal from us. The greatest compliment we can get is when a potential client says: "we've looked at your code and can see you know what you're doing. Can you get us an RFP?"
Nice article.

imo, the only time a table should be used is with something structured in the fashion of a calendar or a form. but only when it's a small part of the page. And even still, you should use css entirely to modify the properties of the table cells.

I agree wit scott. This topic is few years old allready, we know that tables are for tabular data (and ok sometimes for dynamic stuff generted by php for instance), we know that css is faster and its easier to redesign or change layout with it. Is it really this important? We decide with my colleges wich to use depending on projects.
Someone sad its a lot of time to make css looking normal in all browsers. It is true, but it only takes experience and a good team to solve it. Ciao

Even though CSS is superior, cross browser compatibility, compatibility between different versions of Internet explorer sometimes pose a problem. Moreover, for a small site, a tables layout is more suitable.
