The Official "Successful Website Checklist Challenge"
If your website doesn’t stand out and do a heck of a lot of things right, then chances are it’s going to crash and burn. Take our “Successful Website Checklist Challenge” (below) and see what you’re doing right, what you’re doing wrong, and what you’re forgetting to do. We’ve even included notes and resources for nearly every item on the checklist (just to make your life easier).
The Sections
- Planning
- Design/Layout
- Usability/Accessibility
- Content
- Website Optimization/Standards
- Search Engine Optimization/Marketing
Before you begin (toggle descriptions/notes “On” or “Off”)
This page doubles as a comprehensive article/checklist. Although, by default, descriptions and notes under all of the checklist items are visible, you can hide them. If you wish to toggle the descriptions and notes under all of the checklist items “On” or “Off”, Toggle Descriptions Now!.
Are We Missing Something?
Although our “Successful Website Checklist” is pretty thorough, we consider it a work in progress. If you think we’ve left something out, then please let us know by leaving a comment below. We will continue to add visitor suggestions as well as our own findings. Thank you!

May 28th, 2008 at 9:59 amA good list with the most important point included. just one point, leave the xml sitemap for google unless you navigation is badly programmed, meaning in javaScript or flash.

May 29th, 2008 at 2:07 amI didn’t checked Monetization because there’s not on my website.
So are monetization and ads mendatory ? -

May 29th, 2008 at 2:08 amVery useful and informative. But I think that the content is more important, so I would put it before the design/layout point.
Just my two cents…

May 30th, 2008 at 7:34 amThanks for this great article. Good idea to propose how to monetize your site. However, Google penalizes websites which use monetizing services such as Text Link Ads… Isn’t it ?

June 6th, 2008 at 1:18 amWonderful checklist, but maybe i disagree with “Write articles and submit them to niche specific article submission sites” I think that it sometimes can be considered as spam

June 12th, 2008 at 10:07 amWow, great list! Really useful to check if you’re up to date.
I was unsure if I should tick “Usability/Accessibility => Minimal Usage of Flash” - the reason: I don’t even touch Flash. It would have been more clear for me if this point was called something like “Minimal or No Usage of Flash”. -

June 13th, 2008 at 8:18 amWhat a GREAT list. For analytics, I have got to point out StatCounter as well. It’s (IMO) easier and better than just about anything else out there…just a recommendation I think needs a mention.

August 8th, 2008 at 8:39 amThis is a pretty comprehensive list and can certainly be used by the designers as well as the business people who are trying to get a website designed/re-designed. Depending on the scope and the purpose of the project the order might change and items may be included or not. But, overall this is pretty informative and has become quite useful for me in my practice. Thanks!
